Paradise
The Holiday makers paradise, with its expance of clean sand (which is still the same today) its ice cream vendors and pebble stalls, you would here the well known cry of, Hokey pokey a penny a lump, thats the stuff to make you jump. This photograph taken about 1900 shows the hustle and bustle of a busy seaside town, you will notice the ladies with their parasols to keep the sun off, a pure white complexion was the fashion in them days, any sign of redness was regarded as being terribly common.
A Good Gossip.
These two ladies standing outside their homes on Castlegate look a little bit upset by having their privacy intruded upon, these properties date back to the 1790s but look how spic and span everything is. the carpets would be shaken and beaten every morning, the steps scrubbed and pummy stoned white. Most of these houses were demolished in 1940 when a land mine exploded.

Pre War Scarborough. A Sedate Mode of Transport.
The first cab to be seen on the streets of Scarborough appeared in 1836. By early 1900s over 200 cabs, Landaus and Hansoms were plying their trade. A feature of the seasons was the jockey carraige with the drivers dressed in silk blouses and racing colours. This photograph taken in lower Prospect Road shows Tot Pottage in topper on far left whose father was a cab proprietor
